Sunday, July 19, 2009 – “Wheels on the Farm”

The Wheels on the Farm Web

I took this photo the same day as “In the Garden” using my iPhone while at my husband’s Grandmother’s house. Just goes to show you don’t always need a fancy smancy camera to come out with something beautiful and artistic.

Post processing in PSE 7 duplicate layer overlay, high saturation/contrast, white foreground to transparent radial gradient overlay with a black vignette to finish.

Monday, July 20, 2009 – “Would You Like a Pear”

Would you like a Pear web

This is another shot I snapped while at Grandma’s house in Wimer, Oregon this last week.

As in the previous two posts, my little iPhone camera came to the rescue here when I had realized that I had forgotten all of my other cameras.  Grandma has quite a few of these pear trees scattered around the garden.  Lovely, each and every one of them.

Taken with my iPhone, post processing in PSE 7, hue and saturation adjustments to pears, saturation/contrast adjustment to full frame.  Duplicate layer overlay x two, with a black vignette 250 feather and a foreground to transparent white radial overlay to top it off.  Accented edges filter on top.

Tuesday, July 21, 2009 – “Puddle Shadow”

Puddle Shadow web

I love rainy spring days.  I snapped this shot with my Sony Cyber Shot in the back of the Newspaper Office where my husbands works.  I stopped by to bring him a mocha and saw this opportunity.  This is exactly the reason I never go anywhere without one of my cameras.  ;)

Wednesday, July 22, 2009 – “Rest”

Rest web

Model: Claire Hegg
Location: Riverside Park, Grants Pass, Oregon

Claire has been one of my favorite models to work with. Not only is she stunningly beautiful but she’s got a sparkling personality that shines for miles. I have a batch of photos from our April shoot still unedited, this was in the bunch. I believe you will be seeing the last half dozen of these shortly on POTD.

I look forward to doing another shoot with Claire in the fall.

Post processing PSD / PSE 7 / On One Essentials 2 featuring color burn, duplicate layer overlay and my signature vignette/gradient mix.

Thursday, July 23, 2009 – “iTreats from iBrawd”

Maltesers web

Taken with my Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W220.

Maltesers compliments of my friend Mares Twitter.com/__mares__.

iPhone compliments of my wallet. lol

Essentially, this was a perfect evening. Way yum candy, way fun iPhone, way Kapow.

Photo edited in PSE 7. Duplicate layer screens, contrast/saturation adjustments, grain filter, accented edges filter, KAPOW.

Friday, July 24, 2009 – “Home”

Home Web

Model: Susanne Atondo
Location: ??? Grants Pass, Oregon

We were out longboarding and I saw this house.  I thought it was cute so I sat her down and took this pic.

So quaint.  So lively.  It make my heart go weee for the home I grew up in.

Saturday, July 25, 2009 – “Wild West”

Wild West web

It’s so bizarre sometimes the series of events that roll.

Susanne and I recently took some abstract portraits at this location; the historic location of the old Redwood Nursery in Grants Pass, Oregon.

I wanted to do something a bit different than my normal with these, a little more dark, foreboding maybe. I did everything in black in white with just the splash of red. I also brought out a lot of the texture in the wood.

This location had been abandoned for years and was falling apart.

Sadly, it just became the victim of arson, burnt completely to the ground.

I was one of the last photographers in the area to use it as location. =(

Sad.

V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N week!

Whoop whoop!

It wasn’t very relaxing but I did get a ton of stuff done!

We unpacked the new house, all moved in now!  It’s so pretty and loverly! I still am in shock that I’m now a homeowner.  Ta heeeeeeee!

It was my birthday on Monday, oy vey another year older.  My fabulous present from the Pointgiver this year was two new friends, Moxie and TigerBomb.  My new little pals are 8 week old kittens!  So adorable!  I’m sure you will see photos of them here very soon!

I also caught up on four weeks of P.O.T.D. re-posts that I had not been able to do because of the move!  I am so happy though that I still have not missed one single day of my 365 project on Twitter.

The grand re-launch of the all new Katie Kapow Dot Com and my gallery, Kate Winters Photography Dot Com was successfully launched yesterday on its scheduled date.  If you haven’t got a chance to check out the gallery yet, please stop by, browse, leave me a comment or two.  I love to hear what you guys think about my work.  It’s my heart, my lifeblood.

So without making you suffer through anymore of my rambling, here is your re-post for the P.O.T.D. week of July 12, 2009.

As always, feedback is appreciated and thanks for watching the P.O.T.D. on Twitter.

I love showing that you don’t need a million dollar camera in order to produce something interesting and beautiful.  This was a very simple pic taken on my iPhone and post processed in PSE 7.  I took this one just this week out in Wimer, Oregon during a visit to The Pointgiver’s grandmother’s home and garden.  Beautifimous!

Photo Blog #6 – The Appleate Series

Konnichiwa friends! Photo Blog #7 features the Applegate Series.  This group of photos was my first experiment in Photoshop.  I shot the original picture on November 3rd, 2007, while I was doing senior portraits for one of my friend’s little sister.  The sisters had a friend who owns a farm out by the Applegate River in Southern Oregon.  I couldn’t help but snap a landscape while I was working her portraits.

Here’s the original.

Applegate Original Web

It really was a beautiful fall morning.  There was a bit of fog in the falley, and leaves were just starting to fall from the trees.  I like the original, but it’s a little flat to me.  You know me, I love my colors punched.  So the same day I got my own copy of Photoshop Elements I played around with this photo to make a four part series.  (I had been learning on Photoshop version 8.0 and husband and I decided that maybe it would be easier for me to learn on Elements instead.)  The “Applegate as Crystalsong Forrest” version has received a lot of attention since I first uploaded it…yay for my fellow World of Warcraft geeks, but the other versions were not as highly received…until recently.

Suddenly the whole series has become popular, I’ve even been approached with requests from people to purchase original prints, something that hasn’t happened to me before.  Because of it’s recent popularity, I thought I better honor it with a photo blog.

“Applegate, Spring”

Applegate Ultra Spring edit web

It’s quite simple really, I just adjusted the hues and saturation.

“Applegate, Fall”

Applegate Super Fall edit web

Same thing for this one.

“Applegate, Summer”

Applegate Slide Film Effect edit web

This is just a slide film effect.

“Applegate as Crystalsong”

This version is all about temperature.

All together, a nice little first series.  I never expected people to actually like it though.  Hahaha.  =)

Thanks guys!

Photo Blog #5 – Happy Corn

Kon bon wa.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a photo blog so I thought I better get to it.

Popcorn 1 web

Using a shot I took this morning, “Happy Corn”.

A friend inspired this photo from a friendly back and forth on Facebook.  It started when I mentioned that I needed more art in my life, more art and more popcorn.  Diane replied with an idea to make an abstract something out of popcorn and a glue gun.  The idea got me thinking.  I don’t have any glue sticks for my glue gun however I have plenty of popcorn and a camera.

I set this shot up in the most remedial, lazy way.  I very simply put a piece of white printer paper down on my desk, popped a bag of popcorn halfway at 8:30 in the morning, and made a smiley face out of the popped corn and kernels.

I was half asleep while doing this and hastily shot the pic as well.

Go ahead, geek it out buddy. =D

So I auto fired the flash to try and get some shadow without having to properly light anything, since I figured it was too early in the morning for bright light.  Owee I was still half asleep remember?

I loaded it up in Photoshop, as usual.  Didn’t make many adjustments, just added a layer (overlay), brought the midtones up a bit and used the accented edges filter high on smoothness, low on brightness to get my end result.

I think I was even so dumb this morning I shot this on the Portrait auto function, which was not my intention but meh, it turned out just fine.

I hope I didn’t make anyone too hungry but there you go peeps.

Enjoy!
