Kapow has been super busy with the new day job and all, but I wanted to share with you a new gig I’m contributing to, Multi-Hyphenate.

With the new year begins a new 365 project; a new photo everyday all year long – My #POTD (photo of the day).

In addition to this massive undertaking, I wanted to try something new. A movement that I got quite heavily into at the end of 2009 was iPhone photo art. I’ve been testing quite a few iPhone photo editing applications, reading application reviews and what not, and discovered a sort of booming iPhone art movement among some creative artists. This year, I will be writing a review complete with edited photos every month about a different iPhone camera application. I hope to also spotlight artists involved in this movement of photography.

If you yourself are or know someone that has been dabbling in this field, zip me an email here.  I’d enjoy speaking with them, hearing opinions and experiences and potentially spotlighting their work and endeavors on my site.

I took a photo very similar to this one when I had just bought my Canon Rebel XTi in 2007.  It’s interesting, I had just started teaching myself Photoshop in the original piece. You can see a lot of progress in style development and technique.  I’m thinking now, maybe I will re-shoot this every year, just to make a timeline and a series.  Which one do you like best?

I had a texture orgasm in this hotel.  The Graves 601 Hotel in Downtown Minneapolis was quite the boutique chic experience for Kapow.  From the mirrored art, to the textured paneled and painted walls, I was a photographer in heaven.

Here on KatieKapowDotCom I occasionally venture into some joint projects.  For this Holiday celebration, I’ve teamed up with The Pointgiver ( @Pointgiver on Twitter ) for a photo inspired original short story, “The Station Pages”.  The original photo, by yours truly can be found in my gallery, “Fireball Snuffed Out”. This photo was taken July 18, 2009 in Grants Pass, Oregon.  It’s the site of an abandoned gas station.
The photo inspired Mr. Stephen Winters to write a short horror story filled with zombies and fun.  The story is available for download in PDF on the goodies page.

I had a paid portrait shoot with a lovely young couple that was recently engaged.  It’s been a while since I shot in Grants Pass, Oregon so I took them to my favorite little nook along the river.  These stairs have made it in to many of my portraits but I’ve never edited it quite like this one.  Very fairytale like.  She was quite pleased.

“Ghost” is still my favorite high contrast, macro portrait.  This is a self portrait too.  Taken in 2008, the infared fx’s and slight surface blur on my eyes makes it a delicately intriguing piece.

Heh.  Here I’m practicing again.  I think the U.S. is so sexually deprived.  I get emails and messages when I post photos like this telling me how “uncomfortable” these photos, mixed in with my other art, makes my viewers.  Not so much “softcore” as an artistic expression of sexuality, these are some of my most beloved shots.  With a little Kapow humor, maybe I can break some of you in.  If you’re not comfortable with the human form in general, how will you ever be comfortable with yourself?

This is a wonderful example of how I play in my spare time.

This photo was taken while I was metering light.

I was out on a hired shoot for a young couple, taking engagement portraits.  They wanted a shot with the Caveman Bridge in the background.  Lovely shot.  To get the portrait we walked out on another bridge, one of my favorites in Grants Pass, Oregon, that stands parallel to the more historic Caveman Bridge.  Here on this side is positioned the Lodge at Riverside, a fantastic tourist resort, home to the famous Hellgate Canyon Jet Boats.

I’m looking through my lens and snap this landscape without a thought.  No true vision of composition in mind.  Months later, while cataloging some of the hundreds of raw shots I store, I stumble upon this and start to play.

There are a variety of effects in this piece.  Along with my standard vignette and radial gradient overlay (that I’m slowly becoming known for), I’ve done some very simple painting with the preset smart brushes.  I really feel that anyone could do this, given the skills to navigate PSE.  Elements has done something so spectacular by making my beloved Photoshop into a program that most scrap-booking mothers could control.

I used the greenery, cloud contrast, sunset, and high contrast smart brushes in this transformation, tweaking and adjusting the settings and gradient styles on each.  I found the reflected style gradient to be quite useful here, especially with the river surface. I do very little not in excess so as is my standard I have upped the contrast and saturation levels to my style.

There are a few more complex things in play with this piece, including hand painted greenery and mountains and some texture changes.  If you would like specific details on what I’ve done, please message me here at the site, I am happy to share.
